Try as Rick Baker does, the mechanical Kong suit is just not convincing, and poor Jessica Lange never stood a chance with this script. Something uncomfortably dated about this film is its message, and not in its subject matter, but its portrayal, because there's only so much subtlety in this film's deconstruction of the disruptive of the environment. Well, ladies and gentlemen, as much as it agonizes me to say this, although this film isn't as respectable as the classic, I think that it might be more enjoyable; to a certain degree, of course, because even though this film isn't nearly as fresh as its source material, there's still much entertainment and - dare I say it - more depth in some area, regardless of the limits in subtlety, which isn't to say that the film is enjoyable from a technical standpoint. Jeff became a third-time Oscar nominee with his highly intriguing (and strangely sexy) portrayal of a blank-faced alien in Starman (1984), and earned even higher regard as the ever-optimistic inventor Preston Tucker in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988). So I have fond memories of King Kong. I can't really defend 1976's "King Kong" as a piece of film art, as it seems to give in to all of producer Dino De Laurentiis' crassest impulses—the violence and sexuality here push the PG to its breaking point, and Kong is hit with enough bullet squibs to make Paul Verhoeven jealous—but I still kinda love it. The film attracted much unfavorable comment and, as a result, Lange was off the screen for three years. The following year, she won rave reviews for her exceptional portrayal of actress Frances Farmer in Frances (1982) and a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her work in Sydney Pollack's Tootsie (1982) (as a beautiful soap-opera actress).
