They said I was still welcome to come, but would have to pay for my stay. I visited the Argentina WWOOF site when considering volunteer and farming options, but I wasn’t sure how helpful it would be and I didn’t want to pay the membership fee to find out. Best thing is to say that you are a tourist travelling and staying with friends (once you have spent time on WWOOF farms, the hosts will be your friends! Paying in order to work somewhere sounds grotesque to me, as does the idea that the wwoofer, in exchange only for room and board, should work eight-hour days.
You could try contacting the main WWOOF organization instead of the region/country specific one you contacted. I normally do not encourage people to set up volunteer options (often ones that you have to pay for) but I am feeling more and more strongly about this being the best option in Argentina.
Because we only stayed five days and worked 4 hour days, we contributed for meals and our room. But we did bring our own Best Travel Hair Dryers. WWOOFing in New Zealand ~ (Travel Interview). I also got the list two days after I made the payment. @Austin – My guess (based on talking to others) is that most volunteers at the farm will speak English.
In Argentina this could be $2-$10/day if you work full time; we paid about $20/day for room and board. Also, if you do not have a really good handle on Spanish volunteering can be difficult.
It’s a shame that in South america are not respecting the wwoffing purposes and core lines (I’m from South America too, and I can tell you that could happen with some people who just see everything as a bussiness). The boiler was lit once a week for showers; otherwise they were cold. It is absurd for people to feel that they have to “contribute” (i.e., pay money) because they “only” work four hours a day or because they “only” stay five days. I just found out about and really like it so far. Your experience is encouraging! They simply don't have it in their budget to pay workers, so they offer a bed and a roof to get a few things done.
Hi Folks – re the visa questions, generally it is better to get a tourist visa and not even mention that you are there to volunteer on farms. Volunteers at Chacra Millalen, where we volunteered, didn’t have to pay anything if they stayed and worked on the farm a certain amount of time. The address is 31 Hurt Road, Raymond WA. Thats great. I want to second what Macarena says. Otherwise, I was free to wander off, take the dog with me for a swim in the lake, or take the bus into town. The farm owners are more likely to speak only Spanish, but probably know a little English. I wish I was going with one of you girls.

I know a lot of people who have tried and organizations are very skeptical of them....Why would they want to work for free? It was to be a first port of call on a round the world trip. Such a shame.

Several people taught English lessons and the week after we left volunteers started making herbal remedies and building adobe bricks. If you’re considering volunteering on a farm, read this first. I dont know if it was a WWOOF farm but it sounds very much like what wwoof farms do. I loved to help in the garden; weeding a patch can be very therapeutic, but perhaps not for six hours. It was an oasis of small farms, many subsistent, who could earn a little more by selling spare produce at the market.
The lack of answers shows that wwoofing is not popular in Argentina. I’ve learned a good bit about WWOOF and WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). We are currently planning on our next WWOOF adventure and are excited to see another part of the world from this unique vantage point. That would relieve some of the stress, I think. We would love to find a farm that is family run and small. I’m kind of scared, as I’ve never traveled alone to remote parts of a country by myself. It is one of our goals to facilitate the contact and experience between volunteers (WWOOFers), and hosts (usually rural inhabitants who practise or promote organic and sustainable methods).
