possibly my absolute favorite Bergman film. Directed by Ingmar Bergman. Their captures, however, didn't bring victory to those in power. It is about more than God, silent or not. While the rest of the recording is not as provocative, it is still well played and conceived. For some reason I never listened to Winter Light that much as a teen (I gravitated more to Paul Winter/Consort then) but am hearing it with fresh ears as an aging Boomer - and now I can more appreciate the experimentation and talent of this band. Gorgeous, the way a fresh blanket of snow on a frigidly cold winter night is. Winter Light is exposition rather than drama. It is a bleak world, whose inhabitants exist largely detached from one another, and the story of its healing is one which Bergman appreciates as being far beyond this intensely intimate film's scope. After watching this film 4 or 5 times over the years, it has moved into the top spot on my Bergman list and is one of my all time favorite movies. It deals with the God-Man relationship, but also with human relationships in terms of the divine. "Tide Pool" while accented with bizarre twists, is anchored by Walcott's energetic tabla and Towner's pure bred energy on acoustic guitar. In the end, the preacher faces his own short comings, and continues on with his second service at his second congregation (this one is attended only by Thulin's character, the organist, and the church caretaker).
